AGM Summary

2012 Marks thirty years of the Old Mutual Sub Aqua Club’s (OMSAC) existence and we kicked off celebrations with a member bringing a stunning cake in the shape of ‘30’ with divers and underwater critters all over it – wonderful!

Our AGM was hosted for the 2nd time in our newly acquired premises at the Mupine Golf Club in Pinelands and the move has proven to be great for club moral as more members feel comfortable to hang out and chat, as well as provide space for presentations. The most beneficial though, is our nearly sound-proof compressor room, making club nights much more fun.

With the move, we decided to tackle an upgrade of our compressor setup which has proven more difficult than anticipated but we now boast air that is double filtered; a new look control panel, calibrated gauges, stop valve and safety shutoff valves. We do need to consider replacing our compressor though and funds will need to be generated to get it replaced, sooner rather than later. 5 new cylinders were also purchased and our equipment rental is bringing in good revenue.

Our membership is growing steadily at the moment and inevitably, so are instructors. We currently have 3 active instructors at OMSAC, 2 of which are full time in the diving industry.

OMSAC have hosted various events throughout the year but the 2 most successful have to be the International Coastal Cleanup Day and False Bay Treasure Hunt.

We had much more success in Hout Bay in 2011 than with the previous Robben Island cleanup dive. Once again we combined forces with the Plastics Federation of South Africa and Electrolux sponsored an awesome vacuum cleaner, made from recycled plastic, as a prize. Together with other prizes donated by various businesses in Cape Town, just about every diver (approximately 80 divers) left with something in hand. All the money generated from this event was donated to the NSRI.

The False Bay Treasure Hunt was a new initiative aimed at uniting all divers of Cape Town at one event. It was also used as a fundraiser for new gear which will be purchased during 2012. The prizes for this event were spectacular including a 7 day trip to Mozambique for 2 people sponsored by Mango Beach, Two Oceans Aquarium dives, SCUBA gear, etc. The event was very successful and we plan to run it annually.
